QUICK HELP Christmas trees cheap
Gang,
My local Home Depot has alot of balled Christmas trees that are going to be put in their compactor (their stupid policy). These are Fraser, Norway Spruce, and Blue Spruce, about 4-5' tall above the ball. They are willing to sell them to me for $15 each. What do you think my survival rate might be if I wait until spring to plant these? And, what about taking care of them until then? I must purchase today, or they will get destroyed. I also considered buying some for my son's Cub Scout pack as a spring project. Any ideas??

I've had luck with these before. If there in good shape and haven't dried out..
Play the price if you can there going to trash them any way....
when you get them put them together on the ground outside and then cover the root balls with dirt, or wood chips.

I would skip the frasiers and buy the rest. Frasiers are fussy about where they grow. In PA, it is tough, only on North slope of hills, not enough humidity around here. I always have some left over at my garden center from Christmas. I just let them sit where they are until spring. I don't even cover the root balls although it would be a good thing to do. I have never lost a single one. Wholesale price for something like that is about $30 if they are #1 and proper root ball.

Denwood, thanks for the info. I used to visit Quarryville regularly, I used to be a Ford rep, and stopped at Stoner Wade Ford (still there?). I bought 10 of these yesterday, including 3 of the Frasers, and was planning to plant them near my house, which is a south facing slope...I might have to re-think that? I have north facing slope on the property, but out of site from my house, and the deer would make quick meals out of them. I don't know much about the Norway Spruce, which are the nicest of the bunch. Anyone know about their care, and how tall they might get, and how fast?

Stoner Wade is still here chugging along. It is not that the frasiers will die, there is just the strong possibility that they will not look very nice. My dad has one in Oxford PA and it is over 16' tall now but just not quality looking. Norways are my favorite for landscape use and screening. Fast growing 18-24" per year, sometimes more. Easy and not fussy. Very nice dark green. I sell hundreds a year. White pines are more popular and a tiny bit faster but the faster pines grow, the more open they are. Pines only form buds where they stop growing, while spruces and firs form buds all along the leader.
